That was due to old version of OpenFST headers. Debian has this package in 
experimental and thus it was not automatically updated. I had version 1.1 
which did not work, upgrading to 1.2 solved it. It might be possible to check 
for this in configure.

Next problem: missing sfst/fst.h. Apparently external SFST is now needed, 
which of course is a good thing :)
